The Spinal Cord Injury Newfoundland and Labrador Accessibility Roadmap is a tool designed to assist individuals with a spinal cord injury or significant mobility impairment identify accessible locations while travelling across the island of Newfoundland and Labrador.
While an area may be deemed accessible, it is not always one size fits all and each individual, depending on his or her level of injury may need specific knowledge regarding the accessibility level of a business in order to access their services. Each location will be reviewed on its external and internal accessibility based on a straight forward checklist developed by our Peer Support team with Universal Design principles applied. The first task for the SCI Accessibility Roadmap is to provide a listing of Hotels across Newfoundland and Labrador reviewed based on our accessibility checklist. We have a team of volunteers that will assist us in completing this task by the end of 2013. After we complete our review of hotel accessibility, we will be expanding to include other essential travel locations such as gas stations, restaurants and eventually moving in to community businesses and services.
The purpose of the SCI Accessibility Roadmap is not to provide a listing of locations we recommend but rather to provide you with the facts on their accessibility and to allow you to decide to utilize their services based on your needs or preferences.
